Explanation of Service and Rates
(Words that are highlighted are defined on the last page)
The rates quoted to you in this proposal are based on a service of Door to Door. From your plant location at Fair Lawn, New Jersey to your customers dock/door and the prescribed destination city.
This proposal deals with freight classified as FAK and that no freight is classified as a Hazardous Material.
Rates in this proposal do not include any Accessorial Charges such as: pallet exchange, driver assist in loading or unloading, extra stop offs.
The rates include 2 (two) hours Free Time at origin and destination. That time the tractor is at your location or your customer's destination point. Beyond the Free Time of two hours will be calculated as a Accessorial Charge at $50.00 per hour, or a portion thereof.
The rate quote is based on the container will be picked up at the rail empty loaded and returned to the rail terminal on the same day. Delays beyond 1 (one) day at origin will incur Per Diem charges, rated at $15.00 per day.
When the container arrives and is made available for deliver your customer/consignee will have the day of notification plus 1 (one) day to take delivery. Time beyond this Free Time will be subject both Per Diem and Storage charges. Storage Charges will accrue after the 3rd (third) day following notification at a chargeable rate of $50.00 per day.
Intermodal Glossary
Accessorial Charges
Charges for a wide variety of services and privileges that are made available in connection with the transportation of goods. Includes all charges other than freight charges.
Blocking or Bracing
Wood or metal or other approved supports to keep shipments in place in or on railcars, containers and trailers.
EMP
A domestic interline container service offered by Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern. Also included in the program are agent railroads such as I&M Rail Link, Iowa Interstate, Wisconsin Central and Kansas City Southern. EMP provides a fleet of nearly 25,000 48' and 53' domestic containers and chassis that may move throughout a large network.

Free Time
The period allowed the owner to accept delivery before storage or detention charges begin to accrue.
Door-to-Door
A movement of lading from the customers front door (dock) to the receivers front door (dock).
Hazardous Material (Haz Mat)
Substance or combination their of which, because of its quantity, concentration, physical or chemical characteristics, may cause or significantly pose a substantial hazard to human health or the environment when improperly packaged, stored, transported, or otherwise managed.
Intermodal Marketing Company (IMC)
IMCs purchase rail and truck transportation services, utilize equipment from multiple sources, and provide other value-added services under a single freight bill to the ultimate shipper.
Per Diem
Charge based on a fixed rate per day which a carrier makes against another carrier or customer for use of its containers or trailers.
Storage Charge
A charge assigned to the shipper or consignee for holding containers or trailers at an Intermodal terminal beyond the free time allotted to them.
For example, if you receive a Van Notification on an intermodal unit at 0800 hrs on Monday morning, the free time clock will start at 0001 hrs Tuesday morning. If you are allowed 48 hours free time, storage charges will start being assessed at 0001 hrs on Thursday.)
